Heat pump or solar: which should you do first?

They solve different problems. The right order depends on how you heat your home today and how old your boiler is.

Start with the bill you most want to cut

Solar reduces the electricity you buy. A heat pump changes how you heat your home, and it replaces gas, oil or LPG spending with electricity. If most of your annual energy spend is heating — which it is for the majority of UK homes — the heat pump is the larger lever, but it is also the larger project.

Do solar first if…

  • Your boiler is under about ten years old and working well.
  • You want to spend less upfront and see a return sooner.
  • Someone is home in the day, or you charge an EV, so you use generation directly.
  • You have an unshaded south, east or west-facing roof.

Do the heat pump first if…

  • Your boiler is near end of life, or you are off the gas grid on oil or LPG.
  • You are already planning radiator, insulation or extension work.
  • You want to use available grant support while it applies to your property.

Where battery storage fits

A battery is usually the third step, not the first. It makes the most sense once you already have solar, or once you are on a time-of-use tariff and can charge cheaply overnight — which is also what makes a heat pump cheaper to run. See is battery storage worth it?

Frequently asked questions

Should I install solar panels or a heat pump first?
If your boiler still has years left and you want a lower upfront spend, solar is usually the easier first step. If your boiler is near the end of its life or you heat with oil, LPG or old electric heaters, the heat pump is the bigger win and should come first.
Do solar panels make a heat pump cheaper to run?
They help, but less than people expect. Heat pumps use most electricity in winter, when solar generation is at its lowest. Solar reduces your overall electricity bill across the year rather than directly covering winter heating.
Can I install both at the same time?
Yes, and some installers offer both. Doing both together means one set of surveys and one round of disruption, but a much larger upfront cost, so most homeowners stage them.
Which gets more grant support in the UK?
Heat pumps have dedicated grant support through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in England and Wales, and ECO4 may help eligible households. Solar has no equivalent nationwide grant, though it benefits from 0% VAT and the Smart Export Guarantee.
