What makes heat pump prices different in Scotland
Scotland has its own funding route rather than the Boiler Upgrade Scheme: Home Energy Scotland offers a grant plus an optional interest-free loan, and rural properties can qualify for an additional uplift. Colder winters mean sizing and insulation matter more than almost anywhere else in the UK.
Installers quoting in Scotland usually cover towns including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness. If an installer does not routinely work in your postcode area, travel and return-visit costs tend to be built into the price.
The Home Energy Scotland grant
Eligible homeowners in Scotland can get up to £7,500 towards an air source heat pump through the Home Energy Scotland grant. The grant is claimed by a certified installer rather than by you, so check whether each quote you receive is shown before or after the grant — this is the single most common reason two quotes look thousands of pounds apart. Eligibility depends on the property, the technology and the installer, and we do not assess it for you.
What moves your quote up or down
- Heat loss — a proper room-by-room heat loss calculation determines the unit size. A bigger unit costs more to buy and to run if it is oversized.
- Radiators and pipework — heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so some radiators may need to be larger.
- Hot water cylinder — most homes need a new cylinder, and space for it.
- Insulation — loft and cavity work is often recommended first, and changes both the unit size and the running cost.
- Siting the outdoor unit — restricted access, long pipe runs and acoustic requirements all add labour.
